Una de las personalidades más icónicas del mundo de la moda es Anna Wintour, editora en jefe de Vogue desde 1988. Anna Wintour nació el 3 de noviembre de 1949 en Hampstead, Londres, Inglaterra. Su madre fue la profesora de leyes de Harvard, Eleanor “Nonie” Trego Baker y su padre el editor del Evening Standard, Charles Wintour.
En su juventud, Wintour estudió en el North London Collegiate School, donde usualmente se revelaba en contra del condigo de vestimenta y a la edad de 14 comenzó a llevar el cabello en su icónico corte BOB. One of the most iconic personalities of the fashion world is Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Anna Wintour was born on November 3, 1949 in Hampstead, London, United Kingdom. Her mother was the Harvard law professor, Eleanor “Nonie” Trego Baker and her father the editor of the Evening Standard, Charles Wintour.
In her youth, Wintour studied at the North London Collegiate School, where she usually rebelled against the dress code and at the age of 14 began wearing her hair in the iconic BOB. She began to develop her interest in fashion by looking at Cathy McGowan’s Ready Steady Go! and Seventeen magazines sent to her by her grandmother from the United States.
Her father made the arrangements for his daughter’s first job, at the influential Biba boutique, when she was 15 years old. The following year, she left North London Collegiate and started a training program at Harrods. As a request from her parents, she took fashion classes at a nearby school, but soon abandoned them saying: “Either you know fashion or not”. His boyfriend at that time, Richard Neville, gave her her first experience of magazine production at his popular and controversial Oz.
In 1970, when Harper’s Bazaar UK merged with Queen to become Harper’s & Queen, Wintour was hired as one of its first editorial assistants, beginning her career in fashion journalism. Her connections helped her secure locations for the innovative photo shoots of Helmut Newton, Jim Lee and other photographers who set trends. One in particular, recreated the works of Renoir and Manet using models in go-go boots. After several disagreements with her rival, Min Hogg, she resigned and moved to New York with her boyfriend, freelance journalist Jon Bradshaw.
In her new home, she became a junior fashion editor for Harper’s Bazaar in New York City in 1975, however, the innovative eye of Wintour led Editor Tony Mazzola to dismiss her after nine months. After this she worked as an editor in several magazines, such as Viva and New York. She went to work at Vogue later when Alex Liberman, Condé Nast’s editorial director and Vogue’s editor, spoke with Wintour about a position there in 1983.
The first edition she was in charge of was in November 1988, showing a photograph by Peter Lindbergh of Michaela Bercu, 19, with a pair of faded $50 jeans and a Christian Lacroix jacket valued at $10,000. It was the first time that a Vogue cover model wore jeans.
